- FANNIN BATTLEGROUND STATE HISTORIC SITE - A handsome
monument marks the site where Col. James W. Fannin Jr. and his
men surrendered to the Mexican army after the Battle of Coleto
Creek March 20,1836. Though Fannin believe surrender was on honorable
terms, General Antonio Lolpez de Santa Anna overruled the local
Mexican commander's clemency petition and ordered the Texans (
some 342 ) executed at Goliad about a week later. Park is open
daily. Facilities include water, rest rooms, electricity, and
picnic accommodations. One mile south on Park Road 27.
